Afternoon Off.

Afternoon off? What is that? What do I do?
This time of semester is like the silence before the storm. I am sitting here twiddling my thumbs trying to figure out how to make time go faster without spending money. I know that in a weeks time I will be bombarded and gasping for air, trying to keep my head above water.

What I have been doing: Getting thing situated for auditions next week. This means getting cuttings I want read for callbacks, character research, etc...
Getting things ready for Chicago. Meaning getting my checklist ready. Headshots? Resumes printed? Transcripts printed? Audition pieces memorized and perfected? Music cutting?
SO far, all have checks next to them.
Reading plays.

One of my absolute favorite plays I've read recently is "In the next room or the vibrator play"
Luckily, I am headed to Kansas City next Saturday to see the play in the flesh at the Unicorn Theatre. I've never been there but have heard great things! So I'm really excited. It's a beautiful play, and a play I hope to be a part of sometime. Don't let the title turn you off (or on?) because I found the title to be totally misleading, yet it explains exactly what the play is about. When you think of a vibrator, it's dirty, raunchy. When I first heard the title, I figured the play would be similar to an American Pie movie. But really. The play is elegant, simple, and beautiful. The play is set in the 1880's, revolving around a married couple that have a small child. The mother cannot feed her child because her milk is bad. The husband is a doctor who treats women of hysteria. A mainly uses a new treatment known as the vibrator. He practices at home and has his special room that his wife is not allowed to enter. She has no idea of what goes on in this room. The doctor has a regular patient who later becomes friends with his wife. The wife, of course, has lots of questions. The play deals with how the wife and husband become closer and closer. It really really is a touching play. What I also like about it is it includes a lot of humor. Subtle humor. For instance, the husband is treating a hysterical man, and uses the same treatment. When the wife finds out, she asks "But where does he put it? (the vibrator)" I can't wait to see it. The final scene is bound to be beautiful. I cannot wait. Theatre folks, if you can go see the production or at least read the play for yourself.

Well I definitely need to run some monologues.

Until Next time!

  1. I saw "The Lieutenant of Inishmore" at the Unicorn and REALLY enjoyed it. It was a nice production. Intimate and professional, but it also had a very cutting edge improvised feeling to it. I think that's the general vibe of the theater, which I really liked.
